Hello and Welcome to the Get Prepared Blog. Every two weeks we will be appearing in your inbox with a prepping related article on a range of topics that we hope you will find interesting and informative
This week I want to cover a question that gets asked a lot when discussing preparedness and its probably the first question that appears in most people’s minds; Why Bother?
Now I can’t answer that question for everybody, the type of preppers and the reasons they prep is a vast range and depending on their circumstances it could be a weekend hobby, an obsession with equipment and gear or an unwanted real-world necessity.
Speaking from my perspective the first thing to address is what is a prepper?
Is it someone who has a bunker in their back garden and wears a tinfoil hat or is it someone who tops up their car well before their petrol light comes on. For me its both and everyone in-between. Prepping comes in all forms but on the simplest level its planning ahead. Charging your phone before going out, checking your tyres and oil before a long drive, carrying a backup phone charger and a bottle of water when away from home, owning a spare tyre, all of these are prepping on its most basic level and most people have done one thing or another at least once in their life that qualifies them. It doesn’t have to be preparing for a doomsday scenario there’s plenty of minor catastrophise in everyday real life that can be avoided through preparation.
So back to the question at hand, Why Bother? Once again answering from a personal perspective here is why.
Firstly, it’s an interesting and useful hobby, I have thankfully never had to test any of my major preps in real life the minor ones get used all the time whether that be my first aid kit, back up power supply or my go to cereal bar. If something doesn’t interest you it’s very difficult to form into a habit so I’m thankful for the fact I find it so engaging to do. Watching the news and keeping up with what’s happening in the world is very useful when planning for whatever events could befall this country in the future. I was very grateful for example in the early stages of covid when I already had hand sanitizer and plenty of grocery Items that became hard to get hold of it early on. Lets all remember when loo roll was basically currency for a few weeks during spring 2020. You also meet some very interesting people with a wide range of skills and its great to connect with them and see what they have to teach you.
Secondly, I love gear. I can waste a whole day looking at this rucksack or that generator and finding out about all the new products on the market for all sorts of prepping needs. I’m hoping the Get prepared range will expand to reflect this in the future as I source more specialist and interesting pieces of equipment for various tasks and bring them to the market at a reasonable price. I am also a big believer in the military idiom of two is one and one is none so almost everything I have has a best and spare version and in some cases a backup of that too.im a big kid who likes new toys to the point where my local Evri driver just writes “the usual place” when he puts a card through the door because he comes to my house so often. Seriously though if you have a prepping problem you are almost certainly not the first person to have that problem and there’s a lot of solutions on the market in various price brackets to solve entirely or help you build a solution to that problem, research is key!
Third, and most seriously I believe that everyone has a responsibility to be more prepared than most people currently are in the UK. I’m a big believer in self-reliance and being your own cavalry in an emergency and I believe the world would be a better, safer and more resilient place if everyone else did too. Being able to rely on yourself instead of expecting someone to help you is key to the mindset of prepping.
Finally the state of the world here at get prepared we are not prophets, however as I sit and write this the uncertainty in the markets just makes Gold £3,820.50 an oz, Countries are threatening to annex other countries and at home politicians are swapping sides whenever they like and our emergency services are facing more reforms, cuts and a very hard winter. although full blown collapse Is always an unlikely scenario, Its not crazy to suggest that we could be facing a global power shift and a few turbulent years and the world might look quite a bit different afterwards.
Time to Get Prepared?
